Phase 1: Mission design

August 18, 2020

Phase 1 opened

Teams used the resource hub, a curated collection of virtual resources, as they developed and submitted their mission proposals. Any eligible school could form a team and submit — no in-person collaboration or prior experience with CubeSats was required.

September 22, 2020

Virtual panel with industry leaders

October 16, 2020

Mission proposal deadline

Teams submitted mission proposals by 5:59 p.m. ET for review by a judging panel.

December 2, 2020

Finalist announcement

The judging panel used Phase 1 selection criteria to select the five finalists to receive prizes and an invitation to Phase 2.

Phase 2: Mission build and launch

January 2021

Phase 2 began

Finalists received mentorship and additional virtual resources to implement their mission proposals and build their CubeSat prototypes.

April 2021

Flight events

Finalists planned their own flight events, where they launched their CubeSat prototypes.

May 2021

Flight report deadline

Finalists submitted their flight reports.
